Shchedrik means Bountiful in Ukrainian. A Ukrainian song about coming of Spring inspired by a folk tune. The coming New Year which in Ukraine before the introduction of Christianity was originally celebrated in April. Hence, the coming of spring and the coming of the New Year coincide.
When the song became popular in the US, a new lyrics (1936) made it a Xmas song "Carol of the Bells"
